How to Use the ''Carry Answers from'' feature in Pollfish
Pollfish's Carry Answers From feature streamlines questionnaire creation by enhancing piping functionalities for an optimized experience.
Carry Forward lets you take answers from a previous question (the sender) and use them as choices in a later one (the receiver). This makes your survey more logical and relevant by showing only the responses that matter in follow-up questions.
You can choose to carry:
- Selected answers (what the respondent chose)
- Unselected answers (what they didn’t choose)
- Specific selected/unselected answers
- All answers
⇒ How to Set It Up
- Go to the Questionnaire section of your survey.
- Ensure you have at least two questions — a sender and a receiver.
- Select the receiver question.
- In the left panel, locate and turn on the ''Carry Answers from'' toggle
- Choose the sender question and pick the carry option:
- Selected answers
-
- Unselected answers
-
- All answers
-
- Specific selected answers
- Specific unselected answers

⇒ Unselected Answers
If a respondent selects all options in the sender question and you're carrying unselected answers, there will be nothing to carry. In that case:
- A warning pop-up appears
- The receiver question will be empty
⇒ Media Handling
If both sender and receiver questions are of the same type (e.g., single → single), media like images will carry over.
If the receiver question doesn’t support media:
-
If the answer has both text and media—only the text will be carried over.
-
If the answer contains only media (no text), Carry Answers won’t work.
⇒ Advanced Logic (ADL)
"Carry Answers From" works with ADL. However, if the sender question is skipped, the receiver question will appear empty.
Pollfish validates common misconfigurations—like using “Other” or “None of the above”—with popup alerts to help prevent setup issues.
